Being Asian, I love my rice and I love Japanese food especially sushi, donburi and bento because they are filling and taste delicious. I found out that Auckland is a pretty expansive place to eat where the average price for a rice meal is about $10 – $15 per serving!
Thankfully, I found Umi & Umiya Sushi – a Japanese restaurant that sells a wide variety of cheap, filling and tasty sushi, donburi and bento meals for half the price without compromising quality. 😀
The Hunt for the Best, Cheap, Tasty & Nutritious Rice Meals in Auckland CBD
As you know, Asian food is expensive overseas. Therefore, to save money before I start to earn some money myself, I resort to eating instant noodles, biscuits, bread and the occasional western meals like pizza, fish and chips and pies. However, I just had to have my rice!
From my experience overseas, Japanese cuisine (sushi, donburi, bento) offers the best value (rice) meals one could possibly get. So, I set out on a mission to find the best, cheap, tasty and nutritious rice meal I could possibly find in Auckland CBD and that was where I found Umi & Umiya Sushi. 😀
I visited almost every Japanese restaurant within walking distance from my hostel (Nomads Auckland Backpackers), surveyed the price of their food, made a comparison and came to a conclusion that Umi & Umiya Sushi was the best choice. Not only does it have the best value rice meals, it has the most variety too.
Umi & Umiya Sushi at 3/10 Wellesley Street East, Auckland
From the outside, Umi & Umiya Sushi looks like any other Japanese restaurant within the area. It is smaller in size in comparison to the other upscale-looking restaurants, but do not let its humble appearance fool you.
Umi & Umiya Sushi is located at 3/10 Wellesley Street East, Auckland. It is at the corner of the street, on the ground floor, right next to the entrance of Choice Plaza. Beside it is the No.1 Pancake shop that always has a queue of people lining up in front of the shop to buy their pancakes. Other nearby landmark includes Choice Plaza Backpacker and Nol Bu Ne Restaurant. It is open daily from 10am to 5pm.
The Japanese restaurant serves self-service, pick-your-own style of food, so you can create your ideal combination of flavours and variety. With a creative and wide range of delectable sushi and hot food to offer, Umi & Umiya Sushi is a great place to enjoy Japanese food. 🙂
Of Sushi, Donburi, Bento Meals & More!
Come lunch time, the place is packed with people queuing up to buy their affordable and delicious food. Fresh and tasty, the sushi rolls are a huge hit, selling at just $1 each! The hottest item on the menu is none other than their donburi selection which is selling at $6 each.
For those of you who do not know what donburi is, donburi is a Japanese “rice bowl dish” consisting of meat, vegetables and/or other ingredients served over rice. In other words, it is a nutritious and balanced meal on its own – me likey and mum approves! 😉
There is a variety of donburies to choose from such as teriyaki chicken or beef, katsu chicken, karaage chicken, gyoza, tofu and more. And each day, their donburies are sold out by lunch time therefore it is wise to get there early and grab one or two before everything disappears. I had them for lunch and dinner, dine-in or takeaway.
In a Nutshell
Now you know my secret and where to get the best, cheap, tasty and nutritious rice meals in Auckland CBD – Umi & Umiya Sushi. 😀 I literally survived on it; having nutritious, balanced meals without burning a hole in my pocket.
I knew I made a good choice because I brought a German friend there and he fell in love with the place. Since then, he has been going to Umi & Umiya Sushi to buy his lunch and dinner too. He even thanked me for introducing a cheap and good dining place to him that helped him to save some money. Indeed, the good food we enjoyed at Umi & Umiya Sushi is well worth the money spent.
