4D/3N Backpacking Krabi – Fun & Adventurous (Part 2) : Sunset Kayaking @ Phranang Full Moon Kayaking at Ao Thalane (Part 1)

A not to be missed activity when in Krabi, Thailand is to go kayaking in Ao Thalane. Known in Thai as Muddy Bay, visitors will be able to paddle through and explore the beauty and wonders of the magnificent limestone cliff formations, ancient sea caves, mature mangroves and even encounter some friendly sea gypsies and vibrant wildlife as you kayak and explore the natural, pristine beauty of Ao Thalane, Krabi.

After checking-in to our hostel – Glur Hostel in Aonang early in the morning, my sister and I got rested and ready for our first activity of the day, that is sunset kayaking in Ao Thalane, in the evening. I had my very first kayaking experience during my university days but it could not be compared to the breath-taking kayaking experience I had in beautiful Ao Thalane, Krabi. My photos and videos will justify that.

After doing some extensive research online, Phranang Full Moon Kayaking was my preferred kayaking tour operator. They came highly recommended by travellers in TripAdvisor, Ranked #2 of 30 attractions in Krabi Town. #1 is Muay Thai lessons which I plan to engage in the next time I am back in Krabi, along with many other interesting and challenging activities such as rock climbing.

I arranged and booked my sunset kayaking tour with Maria, an exceptionally friendly and helpful staff/guide. However, she was not able to accompany us and had arranged both Somchet and Jojo as our guide. As promised, Somchet arrived on the dot to pick us up from the hostel at 4.30pm. We then found out that we were the only participants of the day and had the entire truck and kayaking expedition to ourselves. Initially, we were a little afraid of Somchet and Jojo because they look menacing with their afro hairdo but, do not be fooled by their looks for they are actually quite friendly, attentive and fun to be with.
Below are some pictures and a video of our journey from Aonang to Ao Thalane. It was fun travelling at the back of the truck, having the cold wind and light rain caressing our faces as we enjoyed the scenic view of town villages, Aonang beach, limestone hills, not forgetting vast palm oil and rubber plantations too. As we travelled deeper into the outskirts of Aonang to our destination in Ao Thalane, we felt our excitement growing and adrenalin pumping as we anticipated our exciting kayaking expedition to begin.

Our first welcome refreshment / fresh fruit – the santol aka wild mangosteen
It has a mild, sweet and sour peachy taste
More welcome refreshments / fresh fruits for us – watermelon, pineapple and a type of berries
Jojo and his merry berries
Somchet getting our kayaks ready for the expedition
My sister and I are ready to rumble!

Stay tune for Part 2 where I will be sharing more information and photos of our kayaking expedition at the sea, through the mangroves, in between cascading limestone cliffs, sea caves and more. Happy travels!

  1. Hi Nadia,

Besides kayaking, I also did lantern lighting, snorkelling, island hopping, jungle touring, elephant trekking, live band reggae music chilling, enjoyed a fire show, and not forgetting sightseeing around Aonang beach and town.

You can check out my full 4D/3N Krabi travel itinerary here:

Other activities that you can try while in Krabi are Muay Thai boxing, snake show, rock climbing, scuba diving, white water rafting, cave exploration, tree top adventure park, and many more. You'll be spoilt for choice as there are so many things to see and do in Krabi. Just take your favourite pick at any of the activities above.

I hope that helps. Have fun planning your trip and enjoy your stay in Krabi! Travel safe and happy travels! 😀

  2. I finally remembered the fruit's name. It is santol aka wild mangosteen. In Thai cuisine, this fruit is used to make som tam when still not fully ripe. It is also one of the main ingredients in the santol and pork and santol and prawn Thai curries. Delicious! 😀

Hi Erika, your trip in Krabi seems really fun. A friend and I are going to Krabi this coming December and we will surely try this sunset kayaking by Phranang Fullmoon Kayaking as you've recommended. What other activities in Krabi have you tried? We are currently working out our itinerary and trip plan right now. Would be great if you can give us other tips and suggestions. 🙂

  4. Oh never eaten that sweet sour fruit before! Wonder what it's called?

  5. Yes, kayaking is so much fun! I'll do it again any time even though I'll be exhausted at the end of the journey. Like you said, it's all worth it.

Your wish is granted Derek, for Part 2 is out! Check it out here:
