New Zealand Working Holiday (Part 11) : Bed in 8-Bed Mixed Dormitory Room at Arthouse Accommodation Boutique Backpackers in Tauranga Review (Part 1)

Arthouse Accommodation Boutique Backpackers in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty is one of my favourite hostels in New Zealand for many reasons. I spent a couple of months in this wonderful hostel while working for a kiwifruit packhouse nearby. 😀 In fact, I was lucky to have found work within a week upon my arrival in Tauranga and stayed there instead of going to Te Puke like everyone else for the kiwifruit season.

If you are wondering whether the hostel helped me to get the job, the answer is no. I found work on my own effort and I will share how I did it plus other loads of info in another blog post, so bookmark my website and follow my updates closely. 😉

Arthouse Accommodation Boutique Backpackers in Tauranga

Like its name, the Arthouse Accommodation Boutique Backpackers is a hostel for backpackers, but with a modern artsy twist. This colourful and vibrant boutique backpacker hostel is located at 102 Cameron Road in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.

Good location is the hostel’s best feature. The boutique backpacker hostel is within walking distance from the Tauranga i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, ManaBus/Intercity bus stop as well as local bus stops, Tauranga City Libraries, Herries Park, The Strand (consists of various restaurants, bars, shops, pharmacy, Asian stores, etc), Tauranga Wharf, Tauranga Downtown, and even Pak’nSave. 😀

Arthouse Accommodation Boutique Backpackers boasts clean, upmarket and affordable accommodation that caters to short, medium and long-term stays. The facilities of the hostel include a shared kitchen and lounge/TV area, lockers, luggage storage, laundry (at $3 a token, 1 token per wash/dry) and a gift shop. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel and costs $5 for 24 hours.

Bed in 8-Bed Mixed Dormitory Room

I chose to stay in the 8-bed mixed dormitory room because it was the cheapest room available at the backpacker hostel. A night’s stay in the 8-bed mixed dormitory room was $25 per person during spring season (September-November).

There was a promotional weekly rate of $145 per person for a bed in the 6-bed mixed or female dormitory room which I took once I knew I was going to stay there for a couple of months for work. I will share more details on that in the next blog post. 🙂

Besides that room, there are also the 6-bed mixed dormitory room, 6-bed and 5-bed female dormitory room, 4-bed mixed dormitory room, and queen room and twin room both with shared bathroom.

My Home Sweet Home in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty

The check-in process done by Shawna at the reception counter was a breeze. I was shown to my numbered bunk bed in room 12 located right next to the reception counter. As pictured in the photos on the website, the room was clean, spacious and comfortable.

Each bed has its own spacious locker/cupboard which we could lock using our own padlock. The hostel does not provide a padlock, but you can easily purchase one from the dollar store nearby. There are 2 windows on the ceiling that allows natural light into the room besides providing good ventilation. There is also a rubbish bin in the room.

As mentioned earlier, Wi-Fi is available at $5 for 24 hours. Because I am a Genius member on Booking.com (which I used to book my room at the hostel), I get free Wi-Fi throughout my stay at Arthouse Accommodation Boutique Backpackers. That benefit saved me a substantial amount of money indeed! 😀

The bed was comfy and warm. It did not take long for me to settle in and make this hostel my home sweet home in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. The first thing I did was to walk down to Pak’nSave (about 15-20 minutes journey) to get some groceries and I was a happy girl.

My first bunch of groceries from Pak’nSave Tauranga includes pasta ($0.98 per packet), pasta sauce ($2.99-$3.50 per bottle), mince beef ($4), coleslaw ($1.70/100g) and greek salad (2.50/100g)
